DEBORAHHHHHHH! What can I say? She’s awesome. She is just about to finish her level 1 book and is working really hard on being consistent with practicing every day, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. Practicing doesn’t need to be for long, it just needs to be every day. Since she started doing it….voila! More progress each week than she was getting before! In your first 30-minute intro lesson, you will have learned the proper sitting and hand position, key names, finger numbers, 3 different rhythms, some dynamic markings, and how to read 5 treble clef notes and 5 bass clef notes on the staff. There are only 4 students maximum in a class so that means you’ll get a bunch of time with me throughout an entire hour. You will get all the time with me that you actually NEED. You THINK you need a ton of attention and for me to be looking at you every single second to correct you, but you DON’T actually need that much attention from me. It ends up being a crutch and you will learn to be helpless when I’m not around. You can ask as many questions as you want in class and I will answer them all. The only time I won’t be looking at you is when I give you a little time on your own to practice what I just taught you. I cycle around to each student many times throughout the hour so you’ll never be left alone for longer than a few minutes at a time. They’ll learn out of their lesson books to be taught fundamentals, but they get to choose songs they love to learn on the side as well so they’ll always have something fun and engaging to want to practice at home. Student of the Month for May: Mike and Student of the Month for June: Elaina! Mike has been working hard on his technique, form, and releasing tension. It has paid off because his playing is so much more expressive. It all comes from the body so once you master that, nothing is off-limits. You just have to be patient with yourself. Elaina is FLYING through her level 2 ADULT book and is playing so beautifully sometimes it makes me tear up a bit! Knowing where she started all those years ago and hearing her now is so special. Keep up the great work, you two- it will always be worth it! You don’t need a lot of practice time to make progress, you just need CONSISTENT practice time. If you only have 30 minutes a day to practice, that’s completely fine, but make sure you practice every day to really cement your new skills and ensure you fully comprehend them. I’d recommend no less than 30 minutes a day since you won’t be able to get through everything you need to practice in less time than that, but practice as much as you personally can if you don’t have 30 minutes in your day. You’ll just make slower progress, that’s all. Slower progress is better than zero progress. Think about your day or your week in advance and schedule your practice time. Maybe wake up a little earlier or do it right after you get home so you don’t forget. Make it a routine! Practicing is not always fun because practicing requires concentrating on the things you CAN’T do and practicing them over and over again until you can. It requires discipline and focus that kids sometimes don’t intrinsically have. In my unique program, kids learn their songs DURING their lesson fully before going home instead of being assigned to learn it at home because the teacher didn’t have time to teach it all in the lesson like what usually happens in traditional, private lessons. This was one of the biggest reasons I changed the way I do things. Students go home knowing their songs already so all they have to do is play through it at home and review it so it’s smooth. This means less frustration and confusion at home for both you and your child! Firstly, you need either an acoustic piano or a digital piano with 88, fully-weighted keys and a bench with a sustain pedal. This is non-negotiable to begin lessons since you need an instrument at home to practice on during the week. Anything less than this is more a toy than an instrument. You’ll also need your lesson books (which I’ll provide you), a pencil, and an assignment notebook, Other than those physical things, you should also have time in your schedule to devote to lessons and practicing! Phi has been playing for less than 2 years and is already in his Level FIVE lesson book. You read that right. Level ✋🏽. AND he’s already finished 3 intermediate side songs in the past 6 months.
