8 Practice Tips Every Pianist Should Know 1. Do not practice for too long Everyone is different, and everyone has their own limits when it comes to concentration. Some people can concentrate for longer than others. You should be able find your limit and recognize when your concentration is dropping. This is the time to take a break, walk, or stop. Concentrated practice is the best. You are focused on what you are doing and not distracted by daydreaming. I find 45-60 minutes is the ideal time for each session. I may do 4 to 5 sessions per day depending on how busy I am. You can also use the "Pomodoro Technique" to help you focus your practice sessions. This is where you focus on one thing for 25 minutes and then take a break for 3-5 minutes. You don’t need a lot of practice time to make progress, you just need CONSISTENT practice time. If you only have 30 minutes a day to practice, that’s completely fine, but make sure you practice every day to really cement your new skills and ensure you fully comprehend them. I’d recommend no less than 30 minutes a day since you won’t be able to get through everything you need to practice in less time than that, but practice as much as you personally can if you don’t have 30 minutes in your day. You’ll just make slower progress, that’s all. Slower progress is better than zero progress. Think about your day or your week in advance and schedule your practice time. Maybe wake up a little earlier or do it right after you get home so you don’t forget. Make it a routine! Practicing is not always "fun" for kids because practicing requires them to focus on things that are challenging them. II believe kids should learn their songs DURING their lesson fully before going home instead of being assigned to learn it at home by themselves.
