How to Help Your Musical Child as a Non-Musical Parent
What can I do to encourage practice?
Here are 12 things you could do to encourage, motivate, and inspire your child to practice every day without having to know any music!
1. Be the guard
Keep siblings and family pets out of the piano area. Older students should also keep their cell phones out of the piano room as this is the most distracting thing students have.
2. Ask to hear an older piece
Ask your child to play an old piece they have completed and are proud of every now and again. It's great to be able to play pieces they already know and to just have the ability to play them without having to learn it.
3. Please help to read the directions
Children often get confused because they don’t understand or can’t read the directions. As you read the directions together, ask them if they are able to answer your question. If they don't know what to do, flip through the book together and find the answer. Even if you aren't taking lessons, lesson books are easy to understand and follow.
